BackgroundPhysical activity has been associated with better reading comprehension and reduces cognitive load (CL), but the role of brain volume in modulating this relationship remains unclear. Therefore, this study aims to determine whether the gray matter volume in key regions modulates the effects of different physical activity modalities on reading comprehension and associated CL. MethodsThirteen male adolescents (12-13 years). Adolescents with MRI data participated in a randomized cross-over trial comparing three conditions: 1) sedentary behavior (SC, emulating a school class), 2) moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT), and 3) cooperative high-intensity interval training (C-HIIT), with physical activity conditions duration adjusted to match SC energy expenditure. Gray matter volumes were measured in the bilateral hippocampus, left pars opercularis, and the brainstem. CL was assessed via pupil dilation during reading using eye-tracking. Reading comprehension was measured through seven-question multiple-choice tests with expert-validated items. ResultsC-HIIT demonstrated superior effects on both CL and reading comprehension compared to MICT and SC, with significant brain volume modulation effects across all examined regions. Brain volume interactions with physical activity modalities systematically modified the pattern of cognitive responses, with C-HIIT consistently benefiting from these modulations, whereas the effects of MICT were generally attenuated. ConclusionThis study suggests that selecting the appropriate physical activity modality may be relevant for cognitive outcomes during reading in adolescents. C-HIIT yielded lower CL and better reading comprehension, and these effects were not explained by brain volume alone but by its interaction with exercise modality.

Purpose: This study aimed to examine the effects of formative and summative assessments on college students tennis performance and basic psychological needs. Methods: A total of 128 undergraduate students (64 males, 64 females; Mage = 19.22, SD = 0.91) participated in this study. Participants were cluster-randomized to either a formative assessment group (n = 64) or a summative assessment group (n = 64). The formative assessment intervention involved setting personalized learning goals and success criteria, administering periodic tests, and providing process-oriented and individualized feedback. The summative assessment intervention involved setting uniform goals for all students, offering instructor feedback only on common problems, and requiring students to practice independently after class without personalized guidance. Both interventions were implemented over 10 weeks, with one 90-minute session each week. Tennis skills and basic psychological needs (i.e., autonomy, competence, and relatedness) were assessed before and after the intervention. Tennis skills were reassessed 1 week after the intervention. Two-way mixed-effects analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to examine the impact of group, time, and their interaction on tennis skills and basic psychological needs. Results: The results showed that the interaction between group and time was significant for all of the outcome variables. Simple effects analyses indicated that, at pre-test, the two groups did not differ significantly in tennis performance or in satisfaction of autonomy, competence, and relatedness (p > 0.05). At post-intervention, the formative assessment group demonstrated significantly better performance than the summative assessment group in tennis skills (MD = 3.50, 95% CI = [1.303, 5.697], p = 0.002), autonomy (MD = 2.44, 95% CI = [1.816, 3.059], p < 0.001), relatedness (MD = 1.33, 95% CI = [0.679, 1.977], p < 0.001), and competence (MD = 1.75, 95% CI = [1.046, 2.454], p < 0.001). At the 1-week follow-up session, the formative assessment group also showed significantly better tennis performance than the summative assessment group (MD = 6.81, 95% CI = [4.667, 8.958], p < 0.001). Conclusion: Formative assessment was more effective than summative assessment in improving college students tennis performance and satisfying their basic psychological needs. These findings suggest that incorporating personalized goals, process-oriented evaluation, and individualized feedback into tennis instruction could promote both skill development and psychological outcomes in college physical education.

Most syntactic approaches converge on the fact that Tense and Agreement are two different functional categories, although there is less agreement on their exact representation and relative hierarchical order. Cross-linguistic agrammatic data seems to support the difference between Tense and Agreement, with patterns of dissociation reported from agrammatism between them, in which Tense is generally more impaired than Agreement. To examine whether there is evidence for such a dissociation of tense and agreement processing in neurotypical individuals, the present study employed Event-Related brain Potentials (ERPs) to study the real-time comprehension of Modern Standard Arabic sentences. Critical stimulus sentences were of the form Temporal Adverb-Subject-Verb-PP, in which the intransitive verb was in either the past or future tense, and was preceded by a singular or plural subject and an adverb indicating past or future tense. The subject nouns were all human and either masculine or feminine. The verbs either agreed with the subject noun or presented a person, number or gender agreement violation. They also either agreed or showed a mismatch with the temporal frame of the adverb, the latter being a tense violation. Results at the verb showed that both tense and agreement violations yielded a biphasic N400 - P600 effect. We discuss these results in light of previous ERP findings and conclude that despite the putative configurational differences between Tense and Agreement, the processing of the two categories in Arabic may deploy the same underlying cognitive mechanisms.

Objectives: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and self-harming sexual behaviours share functional and behavioural overlaps. However, the relationship between NSSI and problematic sexual behaviour (PSB) remains underexplored. This study aimed to investigate the association between NSSI and PSB in two cohorts - a non-clinical university cohort and a clinical PSB patient cohort. Methods: Data were collected from 2,189 university participants and 477 clinical PSB patients. NSSI was assessed via self-report, and PSB was measured with the Sexual Addiction Screening Test-Revised (SAST-R) Core. The four core addictive dimensions of PSB: relationship disturbance, loss of control, preoccupation, and affect disturbance, were also evaluated. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine the association between PSB (presence/absence and severity) and NSSI, looking at effects of gender and contributions of addictive dimensions of PSB. Results: Rates of NSSI were similar in the university (7.1%) and patient (5.7%) cohorts; stratified by gender, a higher proportion of women PSB patients had NSSI compared to in the university cohort (29.3% vs 9.3%). In the university group, who had milder PSB than patients, PSB was associated with NSSI (OR=2.11, p<0.001); a significant gender by PSB interaction was found showing that women with PSB were over four times more likely to have NSSI than men without PSB (OR=4.44, p=0.037). In contrast, PSB severity was not associated with NSSI in PSB patients (OR=1.10, p=0.25). Associations of the addictive dimensions of PSB with NSSI were observed only in the subgroup of university women, in the 'preoccupation' dimension (p<0.001). Conclusions: Our findings highlight gender-specific patterns in the association between PSB and NSSI, suggesting the need for further research and possibly targeted prevention and intervention strategies in women.

Objective: To develop the first inventory to measure psychosocial concerns about use of the non-preferred hand, toward the long-term goal of identifying the casual factors of left-right hand choices ("hand usage"). Design: Cross-sectional Setting: Online question battery Participants: 181 healthy adults Interventions; Not applicable Main Outcome Measures: Self-reported concerns about emotional and physical consequences of using the non-preferred hand. Results: Emotional and physical consequences reflected internally consistent categories (Cronbach's > 0.9) that were moderately correlated with each other ({rho} = 0.783 p = 0.002). Concerns were activity-dependent in each category ({rho} < 1x10-100). Reliability analysis and principal components analysis were used to reduce the battery to the 51-item Changed Hand Usage Concerns inventory, which encompasses everyday tasks and concerns about physical and emotional consequences of using the non-preferred hand in those tasks. Conclusions: Concerns about emotional vs. physical consequences of non-preferred hand use reflect coherent and internally consistent categories The Changed Hand Usage Concerns inventory allows assessment of psychosocial concerns about usage of the non-preferred hand for future attempts to manipulate hand usage via rehabilitation in patients with unilateral or asymmetric impairment.

PurposeThis study examined the association between traditional physical practice participation and vision-related quality of life among junior secondary school students and tested the mediating roles of exercise self-efficacy and visual function anomalies within a serial mediation framework. MethodsA four-wave time-lagged survey was conducted among 1,579 students in Grades 7-9 from schools implementing traditional physical practice activities. Variables were assessed at two-week intervals. Mediation effects were tested using the bias-corrected percentile bootstrap method with 5,000 resamples. ResultsThe total effect of traditional physical practice participation on vision-related quality of life was significant ({beta} = 0.591, p < .001). After including the mediators, the direct effect remained significant ({beta} = 0.404, 95% CI [0.348, 0.457]), accounting for 68.36% of the total effect. The total indirect effect was significant ({beta} = 0.187, 95% CI [0.160, 0.218]), representing 31.64% of the total effect. The indirect effect via exercise self-efficacy was significant ({beta} = 0.088, 95% CI [0.068, 0.112], 14.89%), as was the indirect effect via visual function anomalies ({beta} = 0.065, 95% CI [0.048, 0.086], 11.00%). The serial mediation pathway through exercise self-efficacy and visual function anomalies was also significant ({beta} = 0.034, 95% CI [0.025, 0.045], 5.75%). All confidence intervals excluded zero, supporting partial mediation. ConclusionTraditional physical practice participation was associated with vision-related quality of life both directly and indirectly through exercise self-efficacy and visual function anomalies, including a significant serial mediation pathway. The findings highlight the combined psychological and functional mechanisms underlying adolescents vision-related quality of life.

BackgroundAutonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) and music-induced frisson are sensory-affective phenomena characterized by tingling, chills, and pronounced emotional responses. Previous research has mainly focused on physiological changes during these experiences, whereas much less is known about whether baseline physiological state is associated with subsequent susceptibility. ObjectiveTo examine whether baseline autonomic flexibility, indexed primarily by heart rate variability (HRV), is associated with later ASMR/frisson responsiveness. Resting EEG measures were included as secondary exploratory markers. MethodsFifteen participants were recruited by convenience sampling; after artifact-based exclusion, 10 participants were included in the analyses. A 5-minute resting baseline EEG and ECG was recorded prior to stimulus presentation. Participants were then exposed to auditory and audiovisual ASMR stimuli, classical music excerpts, and a control stimulus, and reported whether they had experienced ASMR-typical sensations or frisson. Main analyses examined associations between baseline physiological parameters and a combined response-positive outcome. Exploratory analyses included participant-level correlations, comparisons between susceptible and non-susceptible participants, and stimulus-specific effect sizes. ResultsHRV-related measures showed the clearest and most consistent pattern of association with responsiveness. Higher baseline total HRV power was associated with a greater number of response-positive stimuli (r = 0.756, p = 0.011), with similar positive associations for high-frequency HRV (HF; r = 0.672, p = 0.033) and baseline heart rate slope (r = 0.751, p = 0.012). Stimulus-specific analyses likewise showed the most consistent positive baseline effects for total HRV power, with HF and heart rate slope pointing in the same direction. Frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA) was negatively associated with responsiveness ({rho} = -0.862, p = 0.001), but EEG findings overall were less consistent than the HRV-related pattern and are best interpreted as secondary exploratory observations. ConclusionsIn this exploratory pilot sample, baseline HRV, particularly total HRV power, showed the most coherent physiological association with susceptibility to ASMR and music-induced frisson. The findings are consistent with the possibility that these experiences depend not only on stimulus properties, but also on pre-existing physiological state. Given the small sample and exploratory design, the results should be interpreted as hypothesis-generating and require replication in larger confirmatory studies.

This study investigated retirement adjustment in retired police officers in the UK (N = 289), examining how time since leaving the service moderates the relationship between perceived organisational support and retirement adjustment while accounting for resilience. Results indicated a developmental trend: organisational support remains stable initially but becomes increasingly influential in later life. Using Johnson-Neyman analysis, a threshold of 32.07 years was identified, after which the association reaches statistical significance. These findings suggest an organisational legacy effect; for the older generation, the retrospective perception of being valued by the service acts as a durable psychological resource. This study offers a novel conceptualisation of long-term organisational influence by identifying a temporally delayed legacy effect that extends beyond existing models of retirement adjustment. The study advocate for lifelong wellbeing strategies that extend, recognising that the organisational relationship continues to shape adjustment outcomes decades after the conclusion of active duty.

ABSTRACT Background: Student nurses satisfaction with their academic programme is crucial for measuring the success of nursing training institutions. However, in Ghana, studies on student nurses' satisfaction have mainly focused on clinical learning, neglecting their satisfaction with the academic programme as a whole. This study therefore, assessed the predictors of student nurses satisfaction with their academic programme. Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional study design was used in the study. A systematic random sampling technique was employed to recruit 241 student nurses from two Nursing Training Institutions in the Eastern Region of Ghana. The Nursing Student Satisfaction Scale (NSSS) was used for data collection and data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 27 software. Results: Correlation analysis revealed significant positive associations between satisfaction with curriculum (r = 0.583, p<0.001), faculty role (r = 0.650, p<0.001), social interaction (r=0.680, p<0.001), and overall satisfaction with the academic programme. After adjusting for the school of the student nurses, the school environment (B=0.354, p =0.000) and social interaction (B=0.291, p=0.001) emerged as significant predictors of student nurses' satisfaction with their academic programme. Conclusion: The study highlights the need for interventions to enhance the school environment and foster positive social interactions to improve student nurses satisfaction with their academic programme.

Introduction Experiential acceptance refers to the capacity to be open to internal experiences without attempting to change or avoid them. Although acceptance is a core emotion regulation strategy within mindfulness- and acceptance-based interventions (MABIs) and a protective factor for mental health, its conceptualization and implementation remain unclear and ambiguous. The aim of this study was to clarify and develop a comprehensive model of accepting anxiety. Method Twenty-six participants from a non-clinical sample with prior experience in MABIs took part in semi-structured interviews exploring their experience of accepting anxiety. Data collection and analysis followed the principles of Grounded Theory to generate a data-driven model of the acceptance process. Results We identified a five-stage dynamic model involving distinct processes: (Stage 1) observing through the body with attentional focus on interoceptive experience; (Stage 2) identifying and acknowledging anxiety; (Stage 3) validating and normalizing the experience through validation and self-compassion; (Stage 4) not reacting characterized by decentering and nonreactivity; and (Stage 5) staying with the experience via exposure. We also identified facilitating factors that support engagement in the acceptance process. Conclusion These findings refine the understanding of acceptance as a multidimensional emotion regulation process by highlighting an active dynamic involving multiple mechanisms underlying the acceptance of anxiety. This model provides a framework for developing more targeted clinical interventions and for investigating individual and contextual variability in these subprocesses.

Wellbeing is commonly defined as the combination of feeling good and functioning well and typically conceptualized as two related but distinct components. Hedonic wellbeing emphasizes pleasure, happiness, and life satisfaction, while eudaimonic wellbeing focuses on meaning, personal growth, flourishing, and the realization of ones potential. The Mental Health Continuum-Short Form was developed as a comprehensive measure of wellbeing and includes three subscales assessing emotional, social, and psychological wellbeing. Although the Mental Health Continuum total score is often interpreted as an indicator of overall wellbeing, the underlying genetic structure of its three subscales and its genetic overlap with other commonly used wellbeing measures remains unclear. Using data from 5,212 individuals from the Netherlands Twin Register (72% female, mean age 36.4), we fitted multivariate twin models to examine the genetic architecture of the Mental Health Continuum and its associations with other wellbeing measures (quality of life, life satisfaction, subjective happiness, and flourishing). Results indicate that, at the genetic level, the Mental Health Continuum is best explained by its three distinct subscales rather than by a latent factor. When considering the Mental Health Continuum together with the other wellbeing measures, we found moderate to high genetic correlations (r = 0.52 - 0.83), indicating substantial overlap in the genetics underlying the wellbeing constructs. However, we did not find evidence for a single common genetic factor underlying all constructs. These findings highlight the multidimensional structure of wellbeing, but the moderate to high genetic correlations across measures suggest that it is important to align the level of measurement (phenotypic vs genetic) with the research question.

Objective: To investigate the effects of breaking up prolonged sedentary behavior (SB) on daily movement behavior and energy balance in adults with overweight/obesity. Methods: Thirty participants (16F/14M; 34.2+-7.3y; 29.5+-3.2kg/m2) were randomized to either BREAK (nine hourly 5-min brisk walking bouts) or a duration-matched intervention, ONE (45-min brisk walking), both performed 5 days/week for 6 weeks. Pre- and post-intervention, daily SB and physical activity (PA; accelerometry), body composition (doubly labeled water [DLW]), total daily energy expenditure (TDEE; DLW), appetite, and fasting leptin were measured. Linear-mixed effects models tested time effects and time-by-group interactions. Results: Only BREAK reduced prolonged SB (-8%; interaction: p=0.043). Both groups shifted SB-PA composition toward greater moderate-to-vigorous PA with proportional reductions in SB and light PA (time: all p<0.012), which were associated with increases in TDEE (+0.67 MJ/d; time: p=0.040). Body and fat mass increased in ONE only (interaction: p=0.061 and p=0.055). No differences were noted in energy intake, appetite, or leptin levels. Conclusions: Spreading short PA bouts throughout the day increases MVPA and TDEE to the same extent as a traditional continuous PA bout. Future studies should investigate whether minor differences in body composition are driven by distinct behavioral/physiological compensations influenced by the daily pattern of PA/SB.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) affects a substantial proportion of university students, yet its factors remain incompletely characterised in South Asian populations. We reanalysed a publicly available dataset of 550 Bangladeshi students from Hasan et al. (2025), conducting a data audit that identified implausible records, including males reporting menstrual symptoms, and reduced the analytic sample to 506 observations. Using Explainable Boosting Machines (EBMs), which capture non-linear effects and pairwise interactions without sacrificing interpretability, we found that psychological distress, elevated BMI and academic dissatisfaction were the strongest predictors of IBS (mean AUC = 0.852 across 100 stratified train-test splits). Critically, several findings diverged from the original logistic regression analysis. Physical activity showed a non-linear risk pattern only at high intensity, the association with gender was substantially weaker when we accounted for metabolic and psychological factors as well and malnourishment does not have a strong an impact as in the original study. These divergences likely arise because the machine-learning model captures non-linear effects and interactions that were not represented in the original regression specification. Our findings underscore the value of reanalysing existing datasets with methods suited to capturing complexity and highlight data quality verification as a necessary step in the secondary analysis.

Background Comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) is essential to the health and well-being of young people. In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where more than 65% of the population is under the age of 25, access to interpersonal CSE remains limited owing to sociocultural and structural barriers. This exposes young people to persistent socio-sanitary vulnerabilities. In this context, mobile health apps (MHAs) constitute a promising solution, supported by the growing use of smartphones among young Congolese. However, this group's intention to use MHAs for CSE has been the subject of little research to date. Objective The aim of this study was to identify predictors of intention to use MHAs among young Congolese, based on the extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT2). Methods A predictive correlational study was conducted in eight public secondary schools in Bukavu (DRC) with a stratified random sample of 859 students. Predictors of intention to use--performance expectancy (PE), effort expectancy (EE), social influence (SI), facilitating conditions (FC), and perceived risk (PR)--and moderators--age, gender, and past MHA experience--were measured from data collected through a self-administered UTAUT questionnaire. Descriptive and multivariate analyses were run on SPSS version 28. Results Mean age of participants was 16.3 years (SD = 1.5). Boys made up 55.1% of the sample. Overall, 51.0% of the sample owned a smartphone, of which 62.3% reported having easy access to mobile data and 16.2% were already using MHAs to learn about sexual health. Intention to use MHAs was positively influenced by PE ({beta} = 0.523, p < 0.001), EE ({beta} = 0.115, p < 0.001), and SI ({beta} = 0.113, p < 0.001). FC (p = 0.260) and PR (p = 0.631), however, had no significant influence. Age moderated all of the relationships tested (F (1, 849-854) = 9.97-20.82; p [≤] 0.002), with more marked effects observed among younger participants 14-15 years old. The final model explained 44% of the variance, indicating good predictive power. Conclusion Intention to use digital CSE was explained primarily by PE, EE, and SI and moderated by age. To strengthen this intention, stakeholders will need to promote e-interventions that are pertinent, easy to use, socially valorized, and tailored to young people's needs and to the local context.

Aims: Youth loneliness is a prevalent global health concern with lifelong health ramifications. Schools, as children's primary peer environments, are promising settings for loneliness interventions. However, school-based interventions are highly heterogeneous and no review to date has evaluated their effect on loneliness specifically. Methods: A systematic review was conducted to identify studies of school-based interventions measuring loneliness as an outcome in children and young people aged up to 18. Meta-analyses were conducted using a random-effects model to pool effect sizes and examine the significance of intervention characteristics and study design. Reported implementation factors were extracted and narratively synthesised. Results: Thirty-eight studies were included in meta-analysis, of which 19 were randomized controlled trials, ten were non-randomized controlled, and nine were single group studies. A small-to-moderate effect estimate was found, Hedges' g = -0.42 [95% CI: -0.71, -0.13], p = .006, and sub-group analyses indicated that differences in study design and quality did not result in significantly different effect estimates. Psychological interventions, followed by social and emotional skills training, produced significantly higher effects estimates compared with other intervention types. Conclusions: Findings indicate that school-based interventions are effective in reducing youth loneliness. However, study heterogeneity, reporting inconsistencies, and a wide prediction interval indicates this finding should be interpreted with caution. Future research may benefit from improved measurement and reporting of implementation factors, particularly dosage and fidelity.

While vaccination conflicts have become apparent, physicians' attitudes toward those with differing views remain unclear. Through an online survey of 492 physicians and 5,252 members of the general public in Japan in February 2026, we investigated attitudes toward four vaccines (influenza, measles, HPV, and COVID-19). Intergroup bias was assessed as ingroup minus outgroup attitudes using a feeling thermometer. Multilevel regression examined associations with agreement group and physician status. Intergroup bias was significantly positive in both agreement and disagreement groups across all vaccine types, and was higher in the agreement group. Physicians exhibited higher intergroup bias than the general public. These findings indicate that vaccination conflict is bidirectional: physicians, often viewed as targets of hostility from vaccine-hesitant individuals, themselves exhibit greater intergroup bias toward those with opposing views. Interventions to raise physicians' awareness of their own bias, alongside communication strategies for vaccine-hesitant individuals, are needed.

Global healthcare is targeting patient-centred care, as it leads to better health outcomes and higher level of patient satisfaction. Patient-centred communication, is an important part of patient-centred care because it focuses on involving patients in their care. Recent surveys both nationally and globally have shown that patients are not involved enough in their own healthcare decisions. This problem is especially common among the elderly with chronic conditions. This study aimed to describe patient-healthcare professional interactions, expectations, and satisfaction in physiotherapy within an understudied context, thereby providing important, specific data on ICE dynamics and satisfaction in the specific setting. Cross-sectional study of participants in scheduled consultations was conducted. Two government physiotherapy centres, seven private physiotherapy centres and two trust centres with physiotherapy facilities in Gujarat, India. 232 patients (from various public and private physiotherapy clinics) participated in the study. Patients' ideas, concerns, expectations (ICE) and satisfaction were explored. Almost 88% of patients reported their thoughts and explanations about their symptoms during the consultation. Most patients described not having any concerns about the diagnosis/treatment, and more than two-third of patients consulting PTs expected explanation for their symptoms. Almost 90% patients were satisfied with the consultation. The study revealed that while most patients conveyed their thoughts during consultations, very few expressed their concerns. Overall, patients were satisfied with their consultations.

Humanity has always admired and created artwork, but the neurocognitive mechanisms behind artistic experience are still elusive. Professional artists and their intimate relationship with their artworks provide a unique opportunity to study the nature of art experience due to their expertise in both art making and art appreciation. During two fMRI tasks, professional artists (N=20) made aesthetic judgments on their own and other artists paintings (aesthetic appreciation task); they also mentally reconstructed the moments when they conceived their artworks or, as a control condition, when they visited now-familiar places for the first time (reconstruction by imagery task). During art appreciation of their own (as compared to other artists) paintings, participants showed stronger recruitment of bilateral posterior parietal cortices, the left lateral occipitotemporal cortex, and the dorso-central sector of the right insula, that is, action-related brain regions also involved in encoding the emotional components of movements. The reconstruction of their own artistic creation (as compared to episodic memory retrieval) involved the left fronto-parietal network associated with motor cognition. Altogether, these results suggest that the mental representations of the actions involved in creating art are integral to the overall artistic experience of painters, supporting an embodied view of the artists experience of art.

Background Phonemic awareness deficits are a core feature of Specific Learning Disorder-Reading (SLD-R). How task- and language-specific factors influence these deficits in alphasyllabary languages may help clarify the cognitive mechanisms underlying reading impairment in SLD-R. Methods Thirty children with a DSM-5 diagnosis of SLD-R (mean age 11.4 years) and 29 age-matched typically developing children were given phoneme blending (words and pseudowords) and segmentation tasks in Malayalam. The effects of age and consonant clusters on task performance were evaluated. Results Children with SLD-R performed significantly worse than controls across most phonemic awareness tasks, with the largest deficits observed in pseudoword blending and word blending, and smaller deficits in segmentation. No significant difference was observed for initial phoneme deletion. In typically developing children, age showed strong positive correlations with phonemic performance across most tasks, whereas the SLD-R group showed weak or absent correlations, except in word blending and initial phoneme deletion. Consonant clusters significantly affected performance in both groups, with SLD-R showing more severe deficits. Conclusions Phonemic awareness deficits observed in SLD-R in alphasyllabary languages like Malayalam are more prominent in tasks where lexical support is absent, like pseudoword blending. These deficits vary across task types and linguistic complexity. Phonemic awareness improves with age in typically developing children, while improvement is uneven in children with SLD-R. The findings suggest that phonemic awareness deficits are a core feature of SLD-R across languages, but their manifestation is shaped by orthographic and linguistic characteristics of the writing system.
